WILDCATS OFFICIATE AT 7TH YEAR GIRLS COUNTY TOURNAMENT

When Lee Holloway County Durham’s Schools Basketball Competitions Manager realised he wasn’t going to be able to run the County Durham 7th year Girls Invitational Basketball Tournament he asked the Durham Wildcats Basketball Club if they would step in. The Club which has this year entered the Women’s National League with the Durham Bobcats readily agreed.
Seven teams from across the county attended the 7th year Girls Invitational Basketball Tournament which was hosted by Greenfield School in Newton Aycliffe.
After preliminary games 4 teams, Dene CST, Durham Johnston, Spennymoor and Framwellgate Moor went through to the semi-finals. Greenfield School (pictured left) although having the same points as Durham Johnston missed out on goal difference – earlier in the tournament these two teams had drawn 6 – 6.

Dene CST and Durham Johnston went through to the final after winning their semi-final games. The final was a close game with both teams moving the ball around and showing good basketball skills. Durham Johnston came through as the 8 – 6 winners.
Durham Wildcats players Paul Elderkin and Kevin Bulger lent their expertise to the tournament by officiating in the games as well as giving the girls advice during the play. They also presented the winning team, Durham Johnston (pictured right) with complimentary game tickets to the ‘double header’ of the  Women’s Division 2 National Cup fixture on Sunday 31st October, tip-off 2pm at Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre. The girls have also been invited to stay on to watch the men play their National Cup game against Bradford Dragons which tips off at 5pm.
